Study, Design and Test of a LENZ-type Wind Turbine

The current concern about reducing dependence on fossil fuels and issues about environmental conditions have guided the survey for renewable energies around the world. The present work was focused in the study, design, construction and laboratorial tests of a small-size vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) of Lenz-type. The wind turbine was chosen based on criteria of operation in turbulent winds and mainly due to low-cost of fabrication and possibility to use it in farms. The study was carried out in the description of wind resources in a specific area from countryside of Brazil. The Lenz turbine was designed, drawn, built and later tested in a low-speed wind tunnel. Experimental data were gathered to describe the characteristics of the prototype and to guide for further modifications to improve wind power efficiency

EVS: Head-up or Head Down? Evaluation of Crew Procedure and Human Factors for Enhanced Vision Systems

Feasibility of an EVS head-down procedure is examined that may provide the same operational benefits under low visibility as the FAA rule on Enhanced Flight Visibility that requires the use of a head-up display (HUD). The main element of the described EVS head-down procedure is the crew procedure within cockpit for flying the approach. The task sharing between Pilot-Flying and Pilot-Not-Flying is arranged such that multiple head-up/head-down transitions can be avoided. The pilot-flying is using the head-down display for acquisition of the necessary visual cues in the EVS image. The pilot-not-flying is monitoring the instruments and looking for the outside visual cues

PENANAMAN KONSEP HUKUM LENZ BERBASIS LABORATORIUM MELALUI METODE SUNGSANG

Hukum Lenz menyatakan bahwa “Arus induksi akan muncul dengan arah sedemikian rupa sehingga menghasilkan medan magnet yang melawan perubahan garis gaya yang menghasilkannya” (Daday van den Berg, 1991:101). Pernyataan tersebut sulit dipahami oleh sebagian besar mahasiswa, terlebih untuk menerapkannya dalam menentukan arus induksi pada kumparan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengupayakan cara menanamkan konsep hukum Lenz berbasis percobaan menggunakan alat-alat laboratorium. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas dengan teknik analisa deskriptif kualitatif. Sampel yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah 90 (sembilan puluh) orang mahasiswa peserta mata kuliah Fisika Dasar 2 di FSM UKSW Salatiga. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kumparan dengan arah lilitan tertentu yang didekati/dijauhi oleh magnet dengan variasi kutub U dan S yang menghasilkan arus induksi dengan arah tertentu yang dianalisa dengan tahapan sungsang sebagai berikut : 1) menentukan arah arus induksi Ii; 2) menentukan arah garis gaya magnetic Bi yang dihasilkan oleh arus induksi; 3) menentukan arah garis gaya magnetic Bm yang mempengaruhi simpal; 4) menentukan perubahan fluks magnetic yang mempengaruhinya (bertambah atau berkurang); 5) membandingkan arah vector Bi dan Bm; 6) menyimpulkan hasil analisa terhadap pernyataan hukum Lenz, dapat membantu mahasiswa dalam menemukan sendiri dan memahami konsep hukum Lenz. Dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa metode sungsang terhadap analisa hasil percobaan dapat membantu mahasiswa menemukan dan merumuskan sendiri pemahaman konsepnya
